About Muonionalusta Meteorites
Muonionalusta is classified as an Iron, IVA meteorite. It was first discovered in 1906 near Kitkiojöki, Sweden. In 2014 more fragments were found by Thomas ÖsterbergIn when he was metal detecting in Norrbotten, Sweden.
The crisscrossing patterns on this meteorite are called the Widmanstätten pattern. This is a crystalline structure made up of interlocking bands of nickel-iron minerals kamacite and taenite. The geometric pattern formed over millions of years as a result of an exceptionally slow cooling process, about 1 degree Celsius every 10,000 years. Nickel-iron meteorites like Muonionalusta, once the molten cores of planets and planetary bodies, are estimated to be around 4.5 billion years old.
